Biography

Gopal Dey is perhaps Odishas’s best known director and one of the intelligent Dramatist and filmmakers in India. Gopal Dey has countless big-grossing, critically acclaimed credits to his name, as dramatist, producer, director and writer. He is wide exposed to both Bengali and Odiya Theater and Cinema. He was born in Kolkata, in 1939. He went to Odisha State University and completed his master Degree in Applied Economics; simultaneously involved with the entertainment Industry. He has more than fifty years of experience in writing, Directing and producing plays for Odiya Theaters. He acted as Producer, Director, Writer for Songs and Drama Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, New Delhi. He was also acted as an approved writer and Director for “Hawa Hawa Natya Sansad, Jatni for Community Development and awareness programs which were basically programs on rural upliftment, National Integrity, Family welfare, awareness programs for Leprosy, Malaria, AIDS, HIV and Drug abuse etc. He is perhaps first Producer, Director and writer for theater soap/serial which was of 40 episodes. He is the writer of many Odiya Plays of “Abhiskar” and “Ahula” for All India Radio, Cuttack. He has written Screenplay and Dialogue for some famous Odiya Films like “Asuchhi mo Kalia Suna”, “Panjuri Bhitare Sari” and “Jor Jar Mulak Tar.” He has written Screenplay, dialogue and directed “Cheta” (TV Play), “Moo Tumaku Bhala Paye” (TV Serial) for Doordarshan, Bhubaneswar. He had participated in Fifth National Festival of Drama, New Delhi, with “Bitarka Aparanha” as director. He had adjudged as Best Director consecutively for three years by Sangeet Natak Academy, Odisha.
